Construction Career Day

The 2^nd Construction Career Day was held September 20 at the William Cherry Exposition Center on the Murray State University Campus. More than 1,100 students from numerous counties in Western Kentucky participated in the day-long introduction to careers in the construction industry. Exhibits were manned by construction professionals who answered questions and demonstrated various construction workforce tasks. Students operated heavy equipment, laid block, climbed power poles, built scaffolding, welded, used drills and jackhammers, performed carpentry and sheet metal work, etc. They were also introduced to other construction careers, such as architecture.

Associated General Contractors of Western Kentucky, Murray State University and West Kentucky Community & Technical College organized the event. The objective was to acquaint students with construction career opportunities and provide the information needed to pursue construction careers through educational programs or on-the-job training.

Participating schools were Ballard County ATC, Butler County ATC, Caldwell County ATC, Christian County ATC, Earle Clements Job Corps Center, Fulton County ATC, Henderson County ATC, Hopkins County ATC, Marshall County Tech School, Mayfield-Graves County ATC, Muhlenberg County ATC, Murray-Calloway County ATC, Ohio County ATC, Paducah ATC, Russellville ATC, Union County High School, and Webster County ATC.

The success of this event is due to the ongoing partnerships with local schools, construction vendors, contractors, and building crafts.
